SD Senator and Senate Majority Leader John Thune will be the featured guest at the Black Hills Press Club and Forum. About the Speaker: John Thune, a Murdo, South Dakota native, was inspired to pursue public service after a chance meeting with U.S. Rep. Jim Abdnor at a high school basketball game. That moment sparked a lifelong interest in politics, leading him to his undergraduate degree from Biola University and a masters degree in business administration from the University of South Dakota. John began his career in public service working for U.S. Sen. Jim Abdnor and later at the Small Business Administration under President Reagan. He went on to serve in various state leadership roles before being elected in 1996 to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served three terms, later winning a U.S. Senate seat in 2004 and becoming only the second South Dakotan in history to be elected to a fourth Senate term in 2022. As Majority Leader, Thune plays a major role in the implementation of the Republican legislative agenda. Most recently, national news pundits called his role ‘vital’ in securing the votes necessary to pass President Trump’s budget bill by a 51-50 vote. In addition to his role as Majority Leader, he also serves on the Agriculture, Commerce and Finance Committees.
