Join us for the Discovering History Speaker Series featuring Mansel G. Blackford, a professor emeritus of history at Ohio State University, as he presents "Land Hunger: Ohio and the Western Frontiers." In this insightful talk, Blackford will delve into how land use shaped the experiences of Native Americans, African Americans, and Euro Americans in the Ohio Country over several centuries. He will explore the attempts to transfer knowledge from the Midwest to regions like the Oregon Country and the Great Plains, revealing both successes and failures. The discussion will highlight how individuals navigated new environments during frontier times and address critical questions about the impact of historical land and water conceptions on contemporary environmental challenges. Blackford's talk is based on his newly published book, "Land Hunger: Ohio and the Western Frontiers" (Athens: Ohio University Press, 2025), available for purchase at the Museum Gift Shop. This FREE event is sponsored by the Washington County Public Library and is open to the public.
